While NVIDIA Edify 3D focuses on generating high-quality 3D assets or models from text descriptions or images, it’s actually part of a larger suite of Edify models designed to use generative AI for various creative tasks. These tools include capabilities for creating 4K images, 360-degree High Dynamic Range (HDR) environments, Physically Based Rendering (PBR) materials, and even video content.

A multi-view diffusion model, which creates images by refining random noise into meaningful content, generates multiple RGB images of the object from different angles. These images capture how the object looks from various perspectives to ensure consistency.

At the same time, a multi-view ControlNet (a neural network designed to guide the generation process with structural information) generates surface normals, which represent the shape and structure of the object’s surface, including details like curves and edges. These surface normals, combined with the RGB images, provide both visual and geometric information. This data is passed to a Transformer-based reconstruction model, a type of AI model that processes sequences of information to predict the object’s 3D shape, textures, and materials.

The result is refined into a quad mesh. To enhance the final output, a multi-view upscaling ControlNet (a neural network that can improve the resolution and detail of textures across multiple angles) makes sure that the 3D model is visually detailed and polished. This process creates high-quality, ready-to-use 3D assets that are suitable for a wide range of applications.
