South Summit Madrid is an annually recurring event that brings together the global entrepreneurial community. This year, the summit focused on the theme 'HUMAN by Design.' It emphasizes the need to create technology that improves people's lives while being ethical and sustainable. The summit encouraged discussions on how technology can support human values, promote inclusivity, and tackle global issues like climate change and social inequality.
María Benjumea, President of South Summit, stated at the inaugural ceremony of the Summit, "We are convinced that all technologies are key to the evolution of society and that the person is at the center and is the creator of these technologies. In the new era, it is more crucial than ever to ensure that technology not only improves our lives but does so inclusively, ethically, and sustainably by putting people at the center.”
Notable figures, such as Marc Randolph, co-founder of Netflix, Steven Bartlett, entrepreneur and host of 'The Diary of a CEO' podcast, and Uri Levine, co-founder of Waze, spoke about their thoughts on the topic. The event also focused on major themes such as tech innovation, business growth, and sustainability.
Artificial intelligence (AI) was also a hot topic at the summit, with many discussions centered around its impact and future potential. Speakers and panels talked about how AI is changing industries like healthcare and finance by driving innovation and creating new opportunities. They shared real-world examples of how AI is improving business processes, making things more efficient, and enhancing customer experiences. There were also important discussions about the ethical and societal issues AI raises, like job displacement, privacy concerns, and the need for responsible AI development.
Beyond showcasing cutting-edge ideas, the event generated substantial economic impact, with an estimated €35 million boost to the local economy. It drew a diverse crowd, with 51% of attendees coming from outside Madrid. With activities like the Startup Competition, investment opportunities, and vibrant networking sessions, South Summit Madrid 2024 was more than just an event - it was a fantastic opportunity for many startups to gain visibility, resources, and connections that could propel their businesses to new heights.
Ultralytics got a chance to participate in the prestigious Startup Competition. This event is designed to help startups grow and gain visibility by pitching their ideas on a global stage. The competition process includes an open call for startups, a rigorous selection process by a jury, and mentoring and training for the top 100 finalists.
We were one of the 100 handpicked finalists from a global pool of startups. The finalists were categorized into different sectors, such as Climate Tech, Fintech, Digital Culture, Health, and more. Ultralytics was selected for the Enterprise category, competing against nine other innovative startups. Represented by our Founder & CEO, Glenn Jocher, we took to the "Next Big Thing" stage to pitch our solutions.
Glenn delivered a compelling three-minute presentation focused on how YOLOv8 can be applied in various industries such as healthcare, agriculture, and retail. Watching Glenn deliver his pitch boosted team spirit, and the competition gave us a fantastic platform to gain visibility and raise awareness on how our models can help create a positive impact throughout different industries.
Another major part of the event was our exhibition booth, where we had the opportunity to engage with our community.
